Universe membership is an effective-dated assertion that a security belongs to a defined eligible set for a specified interval.

In plain terms

A backtest must ask which securities belonged to the universe on each historical date, rather than using only today's members.

Technical

A membership record requires stable security identity, universe identity, inclusion and exclusion boundaries, decision or knowledge timestamps, source, and revision lineage.
