Definitions
In plain terms
A security counts as advancing when its selected current price is higher than the earlier price chosen by the methodology, usually a comparable previous close.
Technical
An advancing issue is one member of a declared session universe classified above its prior comparable close after applying the stated price-comparison, corporate-action, and tolerance policies.
Scope
The label describes a classification count, not the size of the price increase or the security's contribution to a weighted index.
Examples
- If today's comparable close is 51 and the prior comparable close is 50, the issue advances.
Common misconceptions
- One advancing issue receives one issue-count vote even if its price gain is much larger than another's.
