Definitions
In plain terms
Net Advances gives every advancing issue a positive vote and every declining issue a negative vote, then subtracts the second count from the first.
Technical
For advancing count A and declining count D from one reconciled point-in-time universe, Net Advances is x = A - D and is measured in issues.
Scope
This is an unweighted signed issue count; it is neither cumulative nor normalized and does not include unchanged issues in the subtraction.
Formula
x = A - Dx_t = A_t - D_t| Symbol | Meaning | Unit |
|---|---|---|
x_t | Net Advances for session t | issues |
A_t | Advancing issues for session t | issues |
D_t | Declining issues for session t | issues |
Output unit: issues
Examples
- With 620 advances and 480 declines, Net Advances equals 140 issues.
Common misconceptions
- Net Advances does not measure the size of each security's price move.
