Net Advances is the number of advancing issues minus the number of declining issues for one validated session.

In plain terms

Net Advances gives every advancing issue a positive vote and every declining issue a negative vote, then subtracts the second count from the first.

Technical

For advancing count A and declining count D from one reconciled point-in-time universe, Net Advances is x = A - D and is measured in issues.

Scope

This is an unweighted signed issue count; it is neither cumulative nor normalized and does not include unchanged issues in the subtraction.
