A security counts as declining when its selected current price is lower than the earlier price chosen by the methodology, usually a comparable previous close.
Technical
A declining issue is one member of a declared session universe classified below its prior comparable close after applying the stated price-comparison, corporate-action, and tolerance policies.
Scope
The label describes a classification count, not the size of the price decrease or the security's contribution to a weighted index.
Examples
- If today's comparable close is 49 and the prior comparable close is 50, the issue declines.
Common misconceptions
- A declining issue is not necessarily a security with a negative longer-term return.
