Series Identity

Series identity is the complete key and semantic contract that states what a sequence of observations represents.

Also known astime-series identityseries key

Definitions

In plain terms

A column named close is not enough. You also need the instrument, venue or source, currency, adjustment basis, interval, calendar, and field meaning.

Technical

A series key should encode or reference all dimensions whose change would alter comparability, including instrument, field, source, frequency, unit, adjustment, and valid-time policy.

Scope

The dimensions are dataset-specific; the glossary does not prescribe one universal composite key.

Examples

  • A governed dataset records series identity explicitly instead of inferring it from an ambiguous field.

Common misconceptions

  • Series Identity does not have one universal meaning without its stated market, source, and time context.
