Definitions
In plain terms
It checks whether two systems agree and, when they do not, traces the mismatch to timing, scope, identity, corrections, units, or errors.
Technical
A reconciliation contract defines keys, comparable fields, normalization, cutoff versions, tolerances, match statuses, evidence retention, and escalation ownership.
Scope
Agreement does not prove truth, and disagreement does not automatically identify which source is wrong.
Examples
- A governed dataset records data reconciliation explicitly and preserves the source context needed to interpret it.
Common misconceptions
- Data Reconciliation does not have one universal meaning or policy without its declared source, scope, and data contract.
