FTB-C000704 / Financial concept

Normal balance

An account's normal balance is the debit or credit side ordinarily associated with increases for its account type.

Definitions

In plain terms

Assets and expenses are normally debit-sided; liabilities, equity and income are normally credit-sided.

Technical

A D30 normal-balance display keeps a credit-normal liability positive even when its raw debit-positive fold is negative.

Scope

Contra accounts and exceptional balances need declared treatment; normal does not mean every observed balance has that sign.

Examples

  • Raw liability delta minus 3,000 cents can represent a 3,000-cent increase on a credit-normal display.

Common misconceptions

  • Changing presentation signs does not change the stored debit and credit legs.
