Trial balance

A trial balance lists ledger account balances at a stated boundary and compares their debit and credit totals.

Definitions

In plain terms

It checks whether the account-level schedule remains in balance after the selected postings.

Technical

D30 verifies exact totals, currency/scope and a complete eligible journal boundary before assigning an outcome.

Scope

Balanced totals cannot detect every omitted journal, wrong account or equal-and-opposite error.

Examples

  • A synthetic complete journal prefix yields equal debit and credit totals while a missing position prevents a completeness pass.

Common misconceptions

  • A balanced trial balance is not a complete financial audit.
