Market Index

A market index is a governed numerical measure designed to represent the performance or state of a defined group of instruments.

Also known asfinancial market indexindex

Definitions

In plain terms

It combines selected constituents according to rules for eligibility, weighting, calculation, corporate actions, and maintenance.

Technical

A production index requires methodology identity and version, universe and constituents, data hierarchy, weighting, divisor or recurrence, return variant, calendar, governance, and correction policy.

Scope

An index level is not directly investable and the word index alone does not identify one methodology.

Examples

  • A governed index record identifies market index with its applicable methodology version, effective time, source, and units.

Common misconceptions

  • Market Index does not have one universal implementation without the named index methodology, data cutoff, and governance context.
