Dividend yield relates a declared dividend amount to a specified reference price.

In plain terms

A dividend of 2 relative to a price of 100 gives a 2% simple yield under that stated basis.

Technical

Yield requires the dividend horizon and type, gross or net amount, currency, reference price and date, annualization, and treatment of special distributions.

Scope

A displayed yield is not guaranteed future income and different providers can use different horizons.
