Suspense account

A suspense account temporarily holds an amount whose final accounting classification or treatment remains unresolved.

Definitions

In plain terms

It preserves the unresolved amount for investigation instead of hiding it in an unsupported permanent account.

Technical

D30 resolves synthetic suspense through evidenced, linked journal actions and retains who authorized the target classification.

Scope

A zero suspense balance does not by itself prove every classification was correct.

Examples

  • An unidentified synthetic receipt is held in suspense until evidence supports a customer allocation.

Common misconceptions

  • Suspense is not permission to post an arbitrary balancing plug.
