OBV–VPT Magnitude Contrast

OBV–VPT magnitude contrast is the distinction between sign-only volume accumulation and return-magnitude weighting.

Definitions

In plain terms

OBV adds or subtracts the full current volume, while VPT scales volume by the fractional close return.

Technical

For the same positive close, OBV contribution is V while VPT contribution is V×r; equal returns and volumes need not produce comparable levels.

Scope

The two indicators can agree in direction while measuring different magnitudes.

Examples

  • A reviewer computes OBV–VPT Magnitude Contrast from a small OHLCV fixture and checks readiness, units, and edge cases before publication.

Common misconceptions

  • The two indicators can agree in direction while measuring different magnitudes.
