A running total needs a first level. The cumulative starting level is that chosen baseline, and changing it shifts every later level by the same constant.

Technical

If C_0 is the cumulative starting level and increments I_1 through I_t are accepted, then C_t = C_0 + sum from i=1 to t of I_i.

Scope

The starting level affects absolute levels but not increment-to-increment changes; traditional, ratio-adjusted, and volume series can use different documented conventions.
