OHLC Pivot versus Close-Only Pivot

OHLC Pivot versus Close-Only Pivot is the distinction between extrema detected from intrabar high/low and extrema detected from closing prices.

Definitions

In plain terms

Wick highs and lows can create OHLC pivots that a close-only detector never sees.

Technical

The selected contract consumes H and L for pivot geometry; substituting close-only input defines a different algorithm and output.

Scope

Do not compare labels across variants without recording the input field and equality policy.

Examples

  • A reviewer computes OHLC Pivot versus Close-Only Pivot on a small deterministic fixture and checks timing, units, and boundary behavior before publication.

Common misconceptions

  • Do not compare labels across variants without recording the input field and equality policy.

Evidence and governance

  1. scipy.signal.find_peaks SciPy · first party technical publication

Supports: preferred label, short definition, technical definition, variant distinction

Limits: This retrospective signal function is not itself a causal OHLC pivot detector.

  2. Pine Script repainting concepts TradingView · official platform documentation

Supports: preferred label, short definition, technical definition, variant distinction

Limits: Platform display behavior does not establish financial usefulness or predictive value.

  3. Closing Price Investor.gov · official standard

Supports: preferred label, short definition, technical definition, variant distinction

Limits: A close is not automatically an adjusted close and may vary by market session convention.
